Some improvisation can be theatre-unscripted. Beautiful and meaningful. Some can be raw and unfiltered. Some is dreamlike and meditative, meandering through the human experience, touching a little on everything. Some can be challenging high art. Is it boring, or a Hard Watch? It can be hard to tell.

Some improv is less aspirational. It’s earthier, easier to follow. This is the improv of spittle and fart jokes, walking into things and accidentally insulting the vicar. This is the improv of classic turns and stock characters, dumb jokes and getting your comeuppance. It’s as old as story itself, tracing a line through Clousseau, Punch and Judy, and Shakespeare’s Bottom. Yes, that is what she said.

In this course, we will examine classic comedy shapes, tropes and techniques*. Using techniques from stand-up comedy, sketch, and sitcom (and their antecedents), we will give up (for a moment) aspirations to art. Let’s be journeymen and just get the job done. And yes, that is also what she said.

This is a course for those who want improv sometimes to be ‘just’ comedy. For people who don’t mind an audience getting a bit rowdy on their third beer. After all, at a Bon Jovi concert, who doesn’t want to hear ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’?

*By classic comedy tropes, we do not mean we embrace sexism and racism (or any other -isms and -phobias). We take what we can use, and leave in the past what belongs there.

This course is for 12 weeks with a week break after week 6, on Thursdays from 16th January to 10th April, 15:00-17:30 UK time.
