What happened and what didn’t happen – An improviser’s toolkit

Looking for a new start as an improviser? Feeling a bit stuck? Want to take out your scenework brain and tune everything up? Want to laugh like a drain while you do so? Want that close enough to the beach to swim in the evening?

By popular request, AndAlso’s summer longform intensive 2024 is not one of our levels, a technique or a style. We are not teaching the Harold, how to do narrative, or Jerry’s screwy puppytime.

It’s just improv scenes. That’s it. The building block of any improv show. The AndAlso Summer Longform Intensive 2024 is a guide to the science and art of the improv scene. What goes where and how to make them feel satisfying and rich. Over the course of a week, you will explore the elements of a great scene, understanding how they relate to each other and the power they have.

Drawing on influences and training from all over the improv globe, you will explore ideas inspired by the legendary iO and Annoyance Theatres, Keith Johnstone, Patti Stiles and Dave Razowsky. An overview of many ways to play, with an eye on the individuality of the player and how to fit the context. Because scenes are not a mystery. There are techniques, tricks and patterns we can learn without losing our intuition. We can balance the creative and the technical. In fact, we are strongest when we do.

This class includes:

  • ‘To begin at the beginning’: Being inspired by anything
  • ‘Both things together’: Dealing with multiple ideas and cross-initiation
  • ‘This guy again’: Characters that are fun and easy to maintain
  • ‘Do one thing well’: Keeping scenes clear and consistent
  • ‘I was sad, now I am sadder’: Emotional escalation, climax and change
  • ‘This looks pretty’: Physicality, staging and stage picture

Plus (optional) social activities.

When: This class is available as a day class (12-16th August, 11:00-17:00) and an evening class (19th-23rd August, 19:00-21:30), with the evening class being a shorter version of the same syllabus. The day class ends with an opportunity to share what we have been doing with the students of the summer musical intensive.

If you take classes with us in Brighton, this course is designed for those who have taken level 3 or above. It takes some of the ideas covered in previous levels and gives you other ways of looking at them. If your training is with another school, we recommend a couple of years of regular improv practice. Email us on hello@andalsoimprov.com if you would like to discuss whether this is the right class for you.

Cost: Your place is secured with a £100 deposit, bookable from March. The balance is due six weeks before the course. We will send you an invoice with a payment link. For now, add these dates to your diary and start picking out a swimming costume.

Day Class 12th-16th August: £225.00

Evening Class 19th-23rd August: £140.00

This fee is for tuition only and does not include accommodation. We start later in the day to allow Londoners to travel down, but if you are coming from further afield or looking for accommodation for another reason, you can tell us on your registration form and we may be able to help coordinate shared accommodation in Brighton.

Currently, we are expecting to hold the daytime intensive at BHASVIC, Brighton and the evening intensive at the Ralli Hall, Brighton and Hove. However, we are currently seeking our own premises and if this is open in time, will move our intensives there. If it happens, this will be in central Brighton and we will let intensive students know as soon as we do.
