A week of improv by the sea? How about two?
AndAlso’s summer intensives are an opportunity to dive deep into one particular area of improvisation. Whether you want inspiration to take into your teaching or some close feedback to improve your play, our summer intensives are a holiday from the real world and a tune-up for your improv-brain.
This year, AndAlso is offering not one, but two intensives, bookable together at a hefty discount. Two back-to-back weeks of improv on the beautiful Sussex coast.
A week of wonderful learning in a supportive and loving environment. I feel empowered, special, talented and full of life.
Musical Intensive Week 1
Skills: Slow Burn Improvisation
Improvisation can feel like a rush. To fill the space, the silence, the vacuum onstage. Who are we? What are we doing and why? It can be as exhausting for the audience as for the performers, rushing from idea to idea, never stopping to enjoy the view. We invite you to slow down.
Because slow doesn’t mean boring. Slow means careful and curious. Slow means indulgent and luxurious. In this workshop, you will let the character unfold and reveal itself. You will gently blur the line between character and performer to share a little piece of yourself with your audience.
This class includes:
- ‘Yes and no’: Making decisions without railroading the scene
- ‘Friends, families and lovers’: Playing emotional intimacy in a safe, enjoyable way
- ‘Lies told like truth’: Using your own experience and opinions in scenes
- ‘I always do this’: Escalating and de-escalating emotion
- ‘As I was saying’: Scenes with multiple elements
I felt supported and celebrated – Heather made a great effort to calm nerves and promote a sense of unity among the group.
Musical Intensive Week 2
Form: The Musical Monoscene
Somewhere between a classic longform and a one-act play, the monoscene is a musical longform set in a single location and in real-time. Characters have their exits and entrances. It might be a normal day or an extraordinary one. The monoscene is a sophisticated and rewarding longform that is satisfying to experienced improvisers and audiences new to improvisation. It is both recognisable and playful.
This class includes:
- ‘Me and you and who’: Playing clear characters without feeling stuck
- ‘This old place’: Creating a rich environment
- ‘The day or a day’: Enjoying both the mundane and the dramatic
- ‘Landing the plane’: Ending the show in a satisfying way
When:
Week 1: Monday 11th- Friday 15th August 11:00-17:00 each day with optional social activities
Week 2: Monday 18th- Friday 22nd August 11:00-17:00 each day with optional social activities
If you take classes with us in Brighton, these courses are designed for those who have taken at least one full term of musical improv. It is not an introduction. If your training is with another school, we recommend a couple of years of regular improv practice. Email Heather at heather@andalsoimprov.com if you would like to discuss whether this is the right class for you.
