DESCRIPTION:For the audience\, it’s magic\, for the performers\, it feels like flying. Tunes and lyrics appear from nowhere\, and for a moment\, you get to be in the room where it happens. Musical improv is maybe a bit like cheating. \nAvailable in Brighton and Online\, our musical Improv drop ins are for everyone over the age of 18\, from the improv music newbie\, to the twenty-year player. You don’t need any musical improv experience\, or even the ability to sing. Our expert teachers and musician will make you look like lyrical and musical geniuses. No cheating is necessary. \n(NB\, although we do not require it\, some improv experience is advised for this class. All this while learning to love failure. In doing these simple things\, you will find the delight of creating on the fly. Simple improv exercises give you opportunities to reflect on your habits and maybe even change them. The first step to becoming a seasoned improviser\, and maybe making your life just a little bit easier. \nOver two six-week blocks\, our expert teachers will guide even the most nervous of new improvisers from simple games through more complex structures into the basics of scene work\, concentrating both on the immediate fun and how to apply your new skills outside the classroom. \nOur level 1a is perfect if you have never done any improvisation before or want to brush up your skills. It leads into our 1B\, which will deepen your understanding\, and give you more opportunities to practice and grow. \nThis course includes:\n\nHow to really listen\, not just wait to react\nThe power of ‘Yes And’ and how to build in small units\nLearning to fail and how to not care when you do\n\nPlease note: Level 1b starts after half-term for 6-weeks\, on Mondays from 30th October\, and on Thursdays from 2nd November.

SUMMARY:Level 4 - Autumn 2023
DESCRIPTION:Our fourth level builds on the combination of boldness and collaboration of previous levels towards probably the most famous form in improv: the Harold. Based on ‘group games’ and scenes structured together in patterns of three over roughly half an hour\, the Harold allows for stories\, ideas and characters to be woven together without obligation\, a new show emerging from the genius of the group that night. The Harold is a few evenings to learn and a lifetime to master. \nAndAlso approaches the Harold not as a problem to be solved or a magic trick to be learned\, but as something like group meditation. A version of collective creativity where process is as important as product\, the shared and individual experiences supporting and merging into each other. Learning Harold will make you bolder in your own ideas and more flexible to others’. It’s an improv full-body workout and the cumulation of your first year of training. \nThis course includes:\n\nThe structure of the Harold – games\, scenes and the opening\nI’ve got your back – group support\, nurturing diversity of thought and how to be psychic\nBeats\, streams and recurring characters – the tools of the form and what they do\n\nPlease note: We will take a week’s break after week 6 for half-term\, no class on Tuesday 24th October.

DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate the future of Brighton improvisation with AndAlso and some of our friends from the Maydays. Over the course of a (hopefully) balmy September afternoon and evening\, we will share some of our favourite improv games\, tell you all about our plans\, then make some stuff up and have a glass of fizzy wine (or a soft drink). Come for as much or as little as you like. It’s up to you. Seasoned improviser\, or just curious\, we’d love to meet you/see you again/celebrate the end of the summer. \nHere’s what’s happening:\n3.00-5.00pm – Improv Playtime\nA short\, sharp sugar rush of improv joy run by Heather and Jules. This workshop is open to all experience levels and will be based on finding connection while staying light and playful. A great introduction to the AndAlso style\, this will be capped at 20. If you’d like to join the workshop\, you must book your place here and then a place for the launch party with this events book now link above 🙂 \n5.30 – 6.30pm – Town Hall\nWe tell you a little bit about who and what AndAlso is\, and what we plan to build in the next few years.
