SUMMARY:One Thing Leads to Another
DESCRIPTION:There are many ways to connect improv scenes. Stories\, themes\, locations\, characters\, emotions\, relationships. Sometimes just a vague sense of where the show needs to go. Anything can work. But which is right for right now? And how do you avoid doing the same thing all the time? \nBecause connecting scenes involves several different skills. You need to notice what is happening\, then decide what inspires you\, initiate a new scene to communicate it\, and finally respond to the (possibly completely unexpected) direction the scene ends up going. A balance of passive and active\, bold and sensitive. It’s a lot. So\, let’s break it down and examine what we are doing step by step.  \nIn this twelve-week course\, you will look at various ways that scenes connect\, embracing your strengths and learning techniques that may not be instinctive to you. Whether you are doing a Harold\, a narrative\, or something more freeform and ambitious\, this course will provide you with different ways to be inspired and give inspiration\, turning just ‘some scenes’ into a show. \nShows are built of scenes; come work out how. \nBy the end of the course\, students will be able to: \n\nNotice and embrace what inspires you in a scene\nInitiate scenes boldly without placing an obligation on your scene partner\nRecognise what your partner is bringing and bring your own offer to it\n\nThis online course is for 12 weeks from 15th May\, 15:00-17:30 each week (UK time). This term to stay in line with the UK school holidays\, the week break will be after the second week\, falling on Thursday 29th May.  \nThis course is for experienced improvisers\, level 3+ on the AndAlso training pathway\, or 1 year of regular improv practice with an alternative provider. Email jules@andalsoimprov.com if you’re unsure if this course is right for you. \nCourse Policies

SUMMARY:Scenework Workout
DESCRIPTION:What is frustrating and inspiring you in improvisation right now? \nStarting each time from this question\, this course has no syllabus apart from what you bring and what we discover together.  In the past\, focuses have included dialogue\, variety in relationships\, being bold\, structures of scenes and many other things. The aim of this class is to explore how we improvise without a set end goal\, discovering what works and doesn’t for each individual\, making you more flexible and responsive to your partner\, the situation and how you are feeling in the scene. Come do a class of exactly the improv that you want and need right now. \nThis online class is highly experimental\, and recommended for people that have three or more years of regular improv experience. If you are unsure if it is the class for you\, drop us an email to hello@andalsoimprov.com \nThis course is for 6 weeks from 26th May\, 19:30-21:30 UK time. \nThis course is for experienced improvisers\, level 3+ on the AndAlso training pathway\, or 1 year of regular improv practice with an alternative provider. SUMMARY:Free Improv Taster Session - 6th May
DESCRIPTION:What is improv\, anyway? \nImprov is theatre—or comedy—without a script. It’s stories and scenes made up on the spot. But it’s also so much more. It’s a brilliant way to build confidence\, stay calm under pressure\, spark creativity\, and meet new people. It can shift how you see the world\, how you relate to others\, and even how you understand yourself. And yes\, it’s guaranteed to make you laugh. \nImprov is many things: you might call it yoga for the soul\, or mindfulness for show-offs (although plenty of non-show-offs love it too). \nSo… what does it actually feel like? \nThat’s where our free taster sessions come in. \nThese friendly\, no-pressure classes are the perfect way to dip your toe into improv and see what it’s all about. You’ll be gently introduced to core improv ideas—like saying “yes and\,” supporting your scene partners\, and being obvious (in the best way). Through fun warm-ups and easy group or pair exercises\, you’ll get a real taste of the joy and connection that improv offers. \nThe session lasts 90 minutes\, and there’s no commitment—just come along\, have a go\, and see what you think. There may even be a cheeky discount if you decide to join our beginner’s course afterwards. \nWho is it for? \nAbsolutely anyone over 18. We welcome people of all backgrounds\, experiences\, identities\, and abilities. We believe improv is for everyone\, and we do our best to make our sessions as accessible and inclusive as possible. \nIf there’s anything we can do to make the class more comfortable for you\, just drop us a line at hello@andalsoimprov.com. \nGot other questions? \nFor more information\, check out our beginners’ FAQ here.  \nBooking info \nTo join a free taster\, we’ll need the name and email address of each participant. If you’re booking for a friend\, either use their details or send them the link—duplicate bookings will be removed.

SUMMARY:Level 4 - Wednesdays - Summer 2025
DESCRIPTION:Our fourth level builds on the combination of boldness and collaboration of previous levels towards probably the most famous form in improv: the Harold. Based on ‘group games’ and scenes structured together in patterns of three over roughly half an hour\, the Harold allows for stories\, ideas and characters to be woven together without obligation\, a new show emerging from the genius of the group that night. The Harold is a few evenings to learn and a lifetime to master. \n  \nAndAlso approaches the Harold not as a problem to be solved or a magic trick to be learned\, but as something like group meditation. A version of collective creativity where process is as important as product\, the shared and individual experiences supporting and merging into each other. Learning Harold will make you bolder in your own ideas and more flexible to others’. It’s an improv full-body workout and the culmination of your first year of training. \n  \n5 skills you’ll learn with us in Level 4 ‘The Harold’:\n\n\nCreating group games and openings\nCreating contrasting scenes from those openings\nUsing streams and beats\nUnderstanding the rhythm of a show\nYour role in a team\n\n \n\nLevel 4 runs for 12 weeks\, this term to stay in line with the school holidays\, the week break will be after the fourth week on Wednesday 28th May. The course starts on Wednesday 30th April with your end-of-term showing* in week 12 either on Wednesday 23rd July or Friday 25th July\, your teacher will confirm which showcase group you are in in week 1.  \nLevel 4 is a 12-week course – Payment Options:\n\nYou are signing up for a 12-week course\, if needed you can spread the payments by using PayPal and selecting Pay Later or Pay-in-3 at checkout. \nIf you don’t use PayPal and would like to spread the payment for the course\, just pop us an email and we will set up an invoice schedule \nTwo Scholarship tickets & unlimited Concessions tickets are available on every course\, no proof is required\, see our Course Policies for full info.\n\n*Although most of our students perform at the end of their courses\, all showings are optional. SUMMARY:Level 4 - Musical Improv - Summer 2025
DESCRIPTION:Your teacher for Music 1\, Heather Urquhart\, backstage with Showstoppers: The Improvised Musical\nLyrics from nowhere\, harmonies like magic and all-singing all-dancing choruses\, musical improvisation looks a bit like a miracle. And it doesn’t require special skills\, knowledge of musical theory\, or a background in musical theatre. You don’t even need to be able to sing. Like any improv\, you create a character\, build the emotion\, and work with your partner (and the musician). Great songs come out of great scenes.  \nBreaking down musical improv into manageable chunks\, our twelve-week introduction will take you from your first ‘la-la-la’ to set games\, open scenes\, and songs\, even a showing in front of family and friends*. \nNot just for those who already love to sing\, this course builds emotional expression\, freedom\, and confidence. Skills which can be applied in any improv class\, as well as elsewhere in your life. After all\, if you can improvise a whole song\, what can’t you do? \n5 skills you’ll learn with us during Level 4-Music 1:\n\nCommon song elements: verse\, chorus\, and bridge\nCreating beautiful lyrics through repetition\, imagery\, and simplicity\nHow to rhyme without getting in your head\nScene into song: escalating the emotion until you have to sing\nCharacter songs: singing as someone else\n\nThis course assumes a working knowledge of improv scenes and is not recommended for new improvisers. It is best suited to those who have taken AndAlso’s level three or similar training. This is about a year of regular improv practice\, including the core skills of longform improv. Email us on hello@andalsoimprov.com to discuss if this is the right course for you.  \nLevel 4 Musical Improv runs for 12 weeks\, this term to stay in line with the school holidays\, the week break will be after the fourth week on Tuesday 27th May. The course starts on Tuesday 29th April with your end-of-term showing* in week 12 on 22nd July.   \nBecause of the additional demands of musical improv and in response to your feedback\, our musical improv course is slightly shorter than our other courses\, running from 19:30-21:30 each week. \nLevel 4 is a 12-week course – Payment Options:\n\nYou are signing up for a 12-week course\, if needed you can spread the payments by using PayPal and selecting Pay Later or Pay-in-3 at checkout.\nIf you don’t use PayPal and would like to spread the payment for the course\, pop us an email and we will set up an invoice schedule.\nTwo Scholarship tickets & unlimited Concessions tickets are available on every course\, no proof is required\, please check our Course Policies for full info.\n\n*Although most of our students perform at the end of their courses\, all showings are optional. SUMMARY:Free Improv Taster Session - 28th April - Burgess Hill
\nThis taster will be held at Burgess Hill Theatre\, 19:30-21:00 on Monday 28th April. \n

SUMMARY:The Brighton Improv Jam
DESCRIPTION:AndAlso’s Brighton Improv Jam is an opportunity to practise your improv\, laugh till it hurts\, and maybe even learn a little about yourself. Whether or not you have trained with (or heard of) AndAlso Improv\, we invite first-timers and advanced students alike to an energising evening of make-em-ups. \nCome with your friends or come alone\, our experienced facilitators will support and guide you through games and scenes. With a welcoming pre-show warm-up and multiple opportunities to play\, this lively evening encourages creativity\, spontaneity\, and collaboration. It even finishes with a mini-improv show for your pleasure.  \nSchedule\n\n7 pm – Jammers arrive. Briefing and warm-up\n7.50 pm – Audience arrives\n8 pm – Improv Jam\n9.15 pm – Improv Show\n9.45 pm – Have a drink together!\n\n  \nFAQs\nWhat happens in the jam? \nWe make things up! Exactly what depends on who is there and what they want to do\, but your host for the evening will choose a selection of games and scenes to give you the maximum amount of fun with the minimum amount of effort. There will probably be suggestions from the audience\, characters\, scenes and stories.  \nWhat happens in the warm-up? \nWe make sure everybody is ready to play. Your jam leader will set some ground rules for a safe and respectful environment\, then lead you in some group games and short scenes. \nDo I have to be there for the warm-up? \nYes. Our jam is a welcoming and supportive atmosphere\, where people who have just met can play together and the warm-up is an essential part of this. So sadly\, if you miss it\, you will not be able to play.  \nDo I need improv experience to play? \nAbsolutely not! If you would like to come and try improv for the first time\, you are very welcome. Just let us know when you arrive and we will make sure you have a fun time. But be warned\, it does get addictive.  \nHow many times will I get to play? \nWe can’t exactly predict this\, but we limit the number of players and have a variety of game and scene sizes. So we can guarantee being onstage multiple times. Our jam is for you to practice and improve your improv skills\, so there’s no point in doing it just once! \nDo I have to play? \nNot at all! If you want to watch\, you are very welcome to come along at 8 pm.  \nDo I need to be funny to play? \nAbsolutely not. Improv can be all kinds of things\, and funny is just one of them. Come be soulful\, dramatic\, or weird. All styles are welcome. \nWhat happens after the jam? \nFirstly\, some slaps on the back and thank-yous. Then you grab your drink of choice and after the break\, a group of AndAlso teachers\, guests\, and students will make stuff up for you. Sit back and enjoy\, you earned it.  \nHow can I communicate any boundaries or requests? \nIf there is anything we can do to make your evening easier and more pleasant\, you can tell us when you book\, email us in confidence at hello@andalsoimprov.com\, or let us know when you arrive. Any information you share with us will only be shared with the jam leader.

SUMMARY:Level 1a Weekend - February 2025
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to feel more relaxed and creative? To learn improvisation in a sociable\, collaborative way? Or maybe meet new people in a friendly environment\, to laugh hard and maybe even surprise yourself. \nAndAlso’s first level introduces the core skills of improvisation in the form of listening\, saying ‘Yes And’ and trusting the process. All this while learning to love failure. In doing these simple things\, you will find the delight of creating on the fly. SUMMARY:Free Improv Taster Online – 2nd February
DESCRIPTION:Improv is theatre (or comedy) without a script. It’s stories and scenes made up on the spot. But it is many other things as well. It is a great way to build confidence and calm under pressure. And to work on your creativity. And to just meet people. It is also a way of looking at the world\, at other people and even at yourself. All while still being guaranteed to make you laugh. Improv is a lot of things. You might call it yoga for the soul. Or mindfulness for show-offs (though lots of non-show-offs do it too). \nNow\, this all sounds very good\, but what does improv really feel like? What can you expect from one of our courses? AndAlso’s taster sessions are an opportunity to dip your toe in and see what an improv class is. During the session\, you will be introduced to core improv principles like ‘yes and’\, support and being obvious. With a low-pressure group warm-up and a selection of group and pair exercises\, you will get a glimpse of what improv really means. Come spend a zero-commitment 60 minutes with us online and let us share a little bit of what we love to do. There may even be a discount for our beginner’s courses. \nAndAlso welcomes anyone over the age of 18\, regardless of background\, education\, physical ability\, sexuality and gender\, language or any other form of identity. We believe improv can be for anyone\, and pride ourselves on making our classes accessible and friendly. If there is anything we can do to make the class more comfortable for you\, just drop us an email on hello@andalsoimprov.com and we’ll do our best. \nOur Times \nEach online free taster session is one-hour on Zoom\, offered on different days and time slots throughout the year. Your taster may be up to fourteen in total\, but you will spend most of your time in small groups. \nSundays: \n\nUK 19:00\nCET 20:00\nCalifornia 11:00\nNew York 14:00\nNew Zealand 08:00\n\n Online Improv FAQs
