Music Ensemble Autumn ’24: Songwriting for Improvisers
Welcome to the Musical Ensemble Autumn 24 course, where we’ll be exploring the techniques of songwriting and how to seamlessly integrate them into your improv.

The Musical Ensemble is a globally connected group of passionate performers who have been crafting musical magic online since the onset of the pandemic. With members hailing from all corners of the globe, our ensemble is united by a love for musical improvisation and a shared dedication to pushing creative boundaries.
What to Expect:
Are you a musical improviser looking to level up your skills and take your performances to new heights? A unique opportunity to delve into the art of songwriting within the context of improvisational performance. Led by Heather Urquhart (Showstoppers, The Maydays) and Joe Samuel (The Maydays, The Concept) this course will provide you with the tools and techniques you need to craft memorable songs on the spot, elevate your performances, and captivate audiences with your musical storytelling. There will also be optional homework and additional invitations to create written material.
What You’ll Learn:
- Foundations of Songwriting: Explore the fundamental elements of songwriting, including melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyrics, and learn how to incorporate them into your improv performances.
- Song Structure and Form: Dive into different song structures and forms, from verses and choruses to bridges and refrains, and discover how to use them to create dynamic and engaging musical moments.
- Lyric Writing Techniques: Learn how to write compelling lyrics that convey emotion, tell stories, and connect with audiences, even in the heat of the moment.

12 Mondays, 16:00-18:00 UK time, from the 16th of September with a 2-week break after 6 weeks and a show on the last week, week commencing Monday 16th December.
