There are many ways to connect improv scenes. Stories, themes, locations, characters, emotions, relationships. Sometimes just a vague sense of where the show needs to go. Anything can work. But which is right for right now? And how do you avoid doing the same thing all the time?

Because connecting scenes involves several different skills. You need to notice what is happening, then decide what inspires you, initiate a new scene to communicate it, and finally respond to the (possibly completely unexpected) direction the scene ends up going. A balance of passive and active, bold and sensitive. It’s a lot. So, let’s break it down and examine what we are doing step by step.

In this twelve-week course, you will look at various ways that scenes connect, embracing your strengths and learning techniques that may not be instinctive to you. Whether you are doing a Harold, a narrative, or something more freeform and ambitious, this course will provide you with different ways to be inspired and give inspiration, turning just ‘some scenes’ into a show.

Shows are built of scenes; come work out how.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  1. Notice and embrace what inspires you in a scene
  2. Initiate scenes boldly without placing an obligation on your scene partner
  3. Recognise what your partner is bringing and bring your own offer to it

This online course is for 12 weeks from 15th May, 15:00-17:30 each week (UK time). This term to stay in line with the UK school holidays, the week break will be after the second week, falling on Thursday 29th May.

This course is for experienced improvisers, level 3+ on the AndAlso training pathway, or 1 year of regular improv practice with an alternative provider. Email jules@andalsoimprov.com if you’re unsure if this course is right for you.
