I've now completed four improv courses with AndAlso over the last year or so, starting from a base of zero improv knowledge or experience. No regrets! It's masses of fun and all the tutors I've had are funny, proactive and... read more kind, and a lot of thought has gone into the structure of courses so that you build up skill and experience (and therefore confidence) over time. So much work must go into it! And it's amazing that there's an end of course showing in an actual venue at the end to share what you've learned with friends and family. Our classes have opened into proper friendships and a sense of community too, which is a wonderful bonus. I've never had any issues or problems and I've felt able to ask questions and try stuff out and basically it's great. Come for a taster, stay for the course!

I attended a musical improv intensive in Brighton for 5 days in August of 2026 and I was beyond impressed with the course. I travelled from Switzerland on a whim and was not dissappointed. I also had zero experience with musical improv (but about 1 year of regular improv) beforehand and consider myself a poor singer, but I was welcomed and able to achieve beyond my expectations in the short 5 day course. Heather is an incredible performer and an even better teacher, bringing high energy and positivity to every minute of each day. Optional daily social activities were set up by the course for each day, allowing the class of around 16 to form a tight-nit troupe from around the world. Emotional safety was heavily prioritized, and it was incredible to see every performer grow over the week as we sung the days away. The musical accompaniment throughout the week was also incredible - just having a skilled musician to accompany you all day every day was super valuable. I hesitated before booking quite a bit, but I am so glad that I did the course! Just take a punt and rest easy that you are in good hands!

I travel every Summer from Belgium to take intensive improv classes with AndAlso. Jules Munns' teaching and coaching style brings out characters that are fun to play and watch, and that feel more real but are also more comedic and... read more dramatic. He calls bullshit when he sees it, and gives actually useful feedback. The only problem is that when I go back home, I'm can't play with people who have taken Jules' classes.

Applying the wrong idea of introversion (which... read more annoys me) to myself. After seeing my wife in her end of term show I thought what the heck, give it a go. It’s been enormous fun. It’s like permission for adults to play. Kids naturally improvise all the time don’t they? It has also I believe been quite healing. I have an arthritic condition that I simply forget about when involved in this. It’s helped me to recognise and believe in a part of myself that I didn’t know existed. A freer part. And I hope psychologically this will affect my condition in a positive way. I wonder if anyone else has had this experience? It’s also helped me be freer in my art. I love it.

If you have already fallen in love with musical improv, you have come to the right place! I really hope that these classes will go on forever. My life is better because of them. Update: I just attended my first musical improv retreat with Heather and Joe and it was perfect in all ways that matter. If those retreats didn't exist yet, someone would need to invent them.

I... read more was not feeling super confident about meeting a whole new set of people beforehand but Jules set the tone so that everyone was gentle and supportive to each other and he also structured the class and provided side coaching so that everyone felt comfortable, inspired and came away being sad the week was over. The scenes had both profoundly emotional moments and very funny talking-about-nothing. I'd do it again in a second. It was also lovely to be able to get to know people from the US, Italy and UK and to hang out in the evenings.

I deflected and stalled from starting up again, in... read more spite of my friends' enthusiastic insistence, and right now, one week in, I’m really not sure why I held back… Well actually I know exactly why. Because I’d been shutting down for the last 5 years. Like plenty others, I’ve come to realise - through the endeavours of my grown up kids to get their own clarity - that I’m quite a bit more spectrum-y than I ever understood in my 20s, 30s and 40s. Whilst that’s answered a lot of questions for me, my tisms or my age, and the whole Covid era have conspired and caused me to recoil further from social situations. I knew that wasn’t a sustainable path, but I didn’t really know what to do to get past that, and get back to the former me. Well enter Level 1, week 1 of Improv Classes in Brighton… I spent a good fortnight feeling nervous about the impending classes. It felt like such a massive leap to launch into a group of people I didn’t know and spend two and a half hours with them on a random Thursday night. I didn’t want to look stupid. I didn’t want to be the only one in their 50s in the room. I didn’t want to be rubbish at improv. I didn’t want to not get the references people half my age might come up with. I didn’t need to worry. Our excellent, irreverent, super-experienced, been-round-the-acting-and-improv-block teacher Rosy, sought to reassure us from the outset that we couldn’t get it wrong. “Look in the middle of the circle - there’s literally nothing there. There’s nothing to mess up” she proclaims. And then most of the night is spent playing the gentlest, most accessible, non-threatening warm up improv games which are just stupid and funny and keep us riveted in the present moment. And that’s what I’d been missing… the play, the laughter, the absence of judgement, the collaboration and the low-stakes involvement. I know much talk about improv is to do with people stepping out of their comfort zones. Personally, I felt that, rather than doing something uncomfortable, my comfort zone just expanded, quite naturally and effortlessly, to accommodate the things we were being asked to do. The end result was everyone stepping up to take part in one-word-at-a-time scenes. My trio dictated a particularly terse letter to god about the bad weather we’d been having, to our warm, supportive and celebratory group. It felt cathartic in more ways than one. The forgotten benefit of improv is that my week since has felt that bit lighter. I’ve not been overthinking work quite so much. I’ve taken more in my stride. I’ve chatted more to strangers without by brain feeling the need to process, edit and second-guess what I’m about to say, and that’s boosted my self-confidence too. Roll on Beginners Improv Lesson 2. I already know nothing can possibly go wrong.
