Space Opera Opera: The Musical Improv Adventure

Prepare for liftoff with Space Opera Opera, where intergalactic drama meets spontaneous song! Imagine if Flash Gordon, Barbarella, and Spaceballs had a love child—this is musical improv at lightspeed, packed with high-stakes adventure, absurd comedy, and epic harmonies.

About the Course:

In this course, you’ll explore how to create full-length musical space operas from scratch. You’ll belt out heroic ballads, harmonize with alien villains, and discover how to shape sweeping, interstellar narratives—all through song and improvisation.

With expert guidance and plenty of feedback, you’ll develop the skills to blend compelling sci-fi storytelling with bold musicality. And at the end of the course, you’ll perform a fully improvised Space Opera Opera live on stage! There will be a lot of tin foil involved.

What to Expect:

A wild and wonderful exploration of narrative musical improv in the style of epic (and delightfully over-the-top) space adventures. You’ll experiment with genre tropes, build unforgettable characters, and discover how music and story fuel each other in unexpected ways.

🎶 What You’ll Learn:

The Sound of the Stars – Create melodies and lyrics that capture the grandeur, mystery, and comedy of space opera, from sweeping hero anthems to haunting alien lullabies.

Galactic Storytelling – Improvise sprawling sci-fi sagas with brave explorers, sinister empires, and melodramatic plot twists—all sung on the fly.

Characters from Beyond – Bring to life intergalactic rogues, malfunctioning AIs, eccentric space monarchs, and rebellious cosmic misfits—all through song and physicality.

 Epic Musical Forms – Experiment with structured longform techniques, including recurring motifs, surreal dreamscapes, and thematic callbacks to give your performance an otherworldly flow.

 Who Is This For?

This course is designed for confident and experienced improvisers with a strong foundation in musical and longform improv. If you love singing, sci-fi, and ridiculously fun space melodrama, this is your chance to boldly go where no improviser has gone before. Level 6 runs for 12 weeks, with a week’s break after the fifth week on Wednesday 4th June. The course starts on Wednesday 30th April 19:00-21:30 each week, with your end-of-term showing* in week 12, your showing is on Friday 25th  July (there is no class on Wednesday 23rd July).

*Although most of our students perform at the end of their courses, all showings are optional. They are not tests or graduations; they are just a chance to do what you have been doing in class and receive the adulation of your loved ones.

Please note: we hope to move the term to the Ampersand as soon as we’re able. Our venue is not currently accessible, if you have accessibility needs we will keep the classroom at BHASVIC.
