AndAlso’s Brighton Improv Jam is an opportunity to practise your improv, laugh till it hurts, and maybe even learn a little about yourself. Whether or not you have trained with (or heard of) AndAlso Improv, we invite first-timers and advanced students alike to an energising evening of make-em-ups.
Come with your friends or come alone, our experienced facilitators will support and guide you through games and scenes. With a welcoming pre-show warm-up and multiple opportunities to play, this lively evening encourages creativity, spontaneity, and collaboration. FAQs
What happens in the jam?
We make things up! Exactly what depends on who is there and what they want to do, but your host for the evening will choose a selection of games and scenes to give you the maximum amount of fun with the minimum amount of effort. There will probably be suggestions from the audience, characters, scenes and stories.
What happens in the warm-up?
We make sure everybody is ready to play. Your jam leader will set some ground rules for a safe and respectful environment, then lead you in some group games and short scenes.
Do I have to be there for the warm-up?
Yes. Our jam is a welcoming and supportive atmosphere, where people who have just met can play together and the warm-up is an essential part of this. So sadly, if you miss it, you will not be able to play.
Do I need improv experience to play?
Absolutely not! If you would like to come and try improv for the first time, you are very welcome. Just let us know when you arrive and we will make sure you have a fun time. But be warned, it does get addictive.
How many times will I get to play?
We can’t exactly predict this, but we limit the number of players and have a variety of game and scene sizes. So we can guarantee being onstage multiple times. Our jam is for you to practice and improve your improv skills, so there’s no point in doing it just once!
Do I have to play?
Not at all! If you want to watch, you are very welcome to come along at 8 pm.
Do I need to be funny to play?
Absolutely not. Improv can be all kinds of things, and funny is just one of them. Come be soulful, dramatic, or weird. All styles are welcome.
What happens after the jam?
Firstly, some slaps on the back and thank-yous. Then you grab your drink of choice and after the break, a group of AndAlso teachers, guests, and students will make stuff up for you. Sit back and enjoy, you earned it.
How can I communicate any boundaries or requests?
If there is anything we can do to make your evening easier and more pleasant, you can tell us when you book, email us in confidence at hello@andalsoimprov.com, or let us know when you arrive. Any information you share with us will only be shared with the jam leader.
